(Part 1 of 2) The 22nd Annual East Peoria Festival of Lights Queen Pageant was held on Saturday, November 17th 2008. Alyssa Lewellen of East Peoria is the reigning 2007 Miss Festival of Lights. The daughter of Stephanie Lewellen, she is a senior at East Peoria Community High School. As part of her prize package, Lewellen received a $1,200 college scholarship. The Festival of Lights is one of the largest lighted nighttime festivals in the nation. Although there are some pre-Festival events in early November, the Festival of Lights will officially begin Saturday, Nov. 24 and continue until Dec. 31, 2007. Pat's guests are from Morton Community Terrace, a facility that currently has a special wing dedicated to the care and interactions with alzheimer's patients. Her guest will share stories and ideas on the best activities for the caregivers to interact with people suffering from alzheimer's disease.

In this episode of Community focus Pat Keim interviews Colleen Kamin Administrator and Executive Director of Morton Terrace Care Center and Susan Hedricks Special Care Unit at Morton Terrace about the caring for people with Alzheimer's Disease. Dementia is a decline in cognitive, intellectual and memory functions due to disease processes affecting the central nervous system. The condition is often progressive and causes serious problems with social and functional adaptation. In most clinical and pathologic series, at least 50% of the cases of dementia are related to Alzheimer's disease. Currently, no specific medical treatment is available for Alzheimer's disease. Residents and the relatives who take care of them require substantial help and assistance in coping with the disease.

In this episode of Community Focus Pat Keim and her guests Sherry Beckemeyer and Greg Ekel discuss the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation, what polycystic kidney disease is, who gets this disease and how it is treated. Greg and Sherry discuss their experiences of what it is like to live with polycystic kidney disease, when they discovered they had the disease, the signs and symptoms and what their fates are now that they have the disease. Currently Greg is on dialysis waiting on a kidney transplant list. Transplant is the only cure. Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic disorder, passed on from generation to generation.

In this episode of Community Focus, Host Pat Keim discusses with her guests Erica Bland and Debbie Fischer Tazewell Animal Protective Society (TAPS). TAPS is a no kill animal shelter that cares for dogs and cats until they can find new owners. Erica and Debbie brought Pogo a four week old kitten to the show and Katie a ten year old beagle. Both animals are available for adoption. The need for volunteers in a variety of capacities is needed to keep the shelter running as well as foster parents and many fund raisers to keep the shelter open.
